HAMLYN ORCHIDS
HYBRIDIZERS AND GROWERS OF FINE ORCHIDS

Bro. sanguinea var semi-alba 'Red Stripe'

BROUGHTONIAS, CATTLEYOPSIS, LAELIOPSIS SPECIES

The Broughtonia, Cattleyopsis and Laeliopsis species are all plants from the Northern Caribbean and the Bahamas. All  grow in hot mainly arid conditions and are fairly easily cultivated if certain basic environmental factors are provided. In general, they do not grow well in pots and much prefer very free draining media such as rafts of tree fern, cork, slabs of coconut husk, hard driftwood, etc. They appreciate lots of light and good air movement, and like to be allowed to thoroughly dry out before being watered. They are very intolerant of wet conditions. These plants will quickly rot it kept wet.

Mature plants do best if re-mounted every two to four years. When re-mounting mature plants, remove all the roots, as closely to the pseudobulbs as possible, (sounds drastic but must be done) and then re-mount. Tie them firmly in place, using galvanized steel wire, plastic coated wire or strips of panty-hose. Newly mounted plants should be held securely in place so that they cannot shift. Never use bare copper wire. Within a few days, new roots will emerge. Failure to do this will result in die-back of the older pseudobulbs. Plants that are suffering from die back should be promptly re-mounted.

Hybrids with other genera such as Cattleya do very well in pots, but adjust equally well when mounted. In general these plants bloom very early, (most in 2" pots) and some hybrids will flower in the flask.

These species do not like 'Malathion' or 'Dimethioate' ('Cygon 2E'). In instances where plants are infected with scale or mealy bug it is best to remove these physically, and then treat the plants with 'Diazinon'.

Broughtonia hybrids were first produced in Hawaii by the late W.W.G. Moir, in the mid 1950's, from material acquired while on a visit to the West Indies. These hybrids were in the main primary hybrids of Broughtonia sanguinea, as well as a few hybrids of Broughtonia negrilensis (then recognized as Laeliopsis domingensis by the R.H.S.). His first registered Broughtonia hybrid was Ctna. Rosy Jewel, an cross between Bro. sanguinea from Jamaica and C. bowringiana from Belize (then called British Honduras). They are noted for their flat 'Cattleya type' shape strong red colour, and very early blooming habit. Many of these hybrids will flower for the first time while in two inch pots.

During the oil crisis in the early 1970's these hybrids became very popular, as they flowered frequently, often producing large numbers of attractive flowers. The small plants required very little space compared to most other popular orchids of the day. As demand for these hybrids increased many 'breeders' jumped on the bandwagon. Very many hybrids were produced. The result was that Broughtonia sanguinea and Ctna. Keith Roth (a primary hybrid) were bred to literally any plant that would hold a seed pod. The quality of the hybrids declined rapidly, and so did interest in them. Nevertheless, good clones continued to be produced and many have been recognized by the American Orchid Society judges.

With the very limited exposure that our hybrids have received, we have won a total of forty six awards for our Broughtonias and Broughtonia hybrids. Nearly all of our awards have been won by plants exhibited at the Jamaica Orchid Society shows in Jamaica, an annual event, on a few occasions in Miami, Florida and elsewhere Our awarded Broughtonia species and hybrids are:

BROUGHTONIA, CATTLEYOPSIS & LAELIOPSIS SPECIES

Cattleyopsis cubensis

Cattleyopsis cubensis is a Cuban species which is presently very rarely found in cultivation. It is the smallest of the Cattleyopsis species and comes from the Peninsula de Guahanacabibbes in Western Cuba. In that area it grows on trees in the dry limestone forest inthe coastal areas together with Cattleyopsis ortgiesiana.

Bro. sanguinea 'Pink Fairy'                   Bro. sanguinea 'Super Pink'

0000 - Broughtonia sanguinea
Species endemic to Jamaica with 1" - 2" usually brilliant red, sometimes lavender to purple flowers,
with paler median veins, held on 1.5' inflorescences which sometimes branch, bearing 8 - 15 flowers.
The flowers are usually very flat with perfect 'Cattleya type shape'. The lip is broader than long and
normally yellowish or whitish at base. The pseudobulbs are normally quite variable in shape varying
from almost cylindrical to almost globular. They grow well in warm to intermediate conditions.
                        BS $10.00 - $150.00.

0000 - Broughtonia negrilensis
Rare species found naturally only in the south western coastal area of Jamaica.
Vegetatively very similar to Broughtonia sanguinea, except that its leaves have a dull,
glaucous appearance. This species was for a long time confused with
Laeliopsis
            domingensis
and Cattleyopsis lindenii. Flowers vary from a veiny pale to darker
lavender with a long tubular lip which encircles the column to form a tube.
(Some of the better clones have more open form.) The flowers are borne at the ends
of long spikes - to 36" and bear 6 - 15 flowers on a spike (rarely up to 30).
            2" - $10.00, BS $20.00 - $50.00, Specimens - $50.00 - $250.00

Pure white form of the species. Good form. Variety of different clones available.
            Divisions - BS $25.00 up

Cattleyopsis ortgiesiana 'Hamlyn'

This species is sometimes confused with Broughtonia sanguinea by some taxonomists, especially by  those who may have seen the flowers and not the entire plant. Though the flowers are fairly similar in form and size, the lip in Ctps. ortgiesiana always completely encircles the column, a feature which   never occurs in Bro. sanguinea. There are of course several obvious differences in the leaves, roots, and pseudobulbs.

0000 - Cattleyopsis ortgiesiana
Little known species from Cuba sometimes confused with Broughtonia sanguinea.
The flowers are very similar to those of
Bro. sanguinea with a smaller lip, much wider
petals but fewer flowers and with base of the column encircling the column.
Flowers pale lavender with darker striping. Pseudobulbs and leaves very small, leaf
margins serrated, roots large, thick, fleshy and white. Blooms late winter. Few choice
            divisions available - $150.00

twenty very attractive lavender flowers on long, sometimes branched spikes, with
heavily veined, tubular lip. BS on cork $25.00 - $75.00

0000    Broughtonia sanguinea 'Red Stripe' x self
This clone was collected from the wild during the late 1960's and was one of the first whites with
striping on the lip. The form is fairly good and size average for a collected species. The fact that
divisions are still alive is a testimony to it's vigor. Divisions - $250.00

3902 - Broughtonia negrilensis forma alba 'Hamlyn' CHM/AOS x self
Exceptionally rare! Pure white form of the species. The parent plant was collected
from the wild without blooms. All of these seedlings have been blooming pure white.
We expect an entirely new line of white miniature breeding to evolve from these.
